History of the name sacacomie

According to Bernard Assiniwi’s lexicon of Indian names in Canada, the name SACACOMIE, the Algonquin SAGHACKHOMI and the Abenaquis SAJAKHIMEN, would come from the plant LE BLEUETTIER or the resembling shrubs bordering the lakes north of Quebec and Ontario.

The popular language has a saying: "Being all wet from walking in the sacacomie."

SAKKACOMIE
Other sources: Marcel Trudel in The History of Nouvelle-France and Brother Marie-Victorin in the Flore Laurentienne, also speak of Sacacomie. In order to emphasize the accent on the pronunciation of the beginning of this name , for the Attikamags-Montagnais who once lived in this region spelled the name of the lake, Sakkacomie.

They also speak of the plant Le BLEUETTIER, belonging to the Uricacées family, measuring approximately thirty centimetres high and bearing small red fruit. This plant was recognized in Quebec under the Indian name of Kini-kinic. The Montagnais mixed dry leaves from this shrub with their smoking tabacco in order to alleviate the bitterness. Jacques-Cartier himself mentioned this custom and this plant in his notes during his second voyage. A variety of this plant also exists in France, where it is called Busserole. It is a type of shrub whose name, of provincial origin, derives from Bouis.

First you had to get to Lake Sacacomie!

To get to the site of the Hotel Sacacomie, on a rocky pinnacle overlooking the lake, it was important to start by designing a route crossing mountains and ravines. This large-scale project covered a distance of 6.5 kilometers.

Building and transporting a hotel !

Following the fire that completely ravaged the establishment on October 31, 1996, the Hotel was completely redesigned by an architect called Robert Constantin.

Later, Hotel Sacacomie was prepared piece upon piece by Maisons Hestia in Papineauville. Assembled, numbered and dismantled, the new hotel was transported to the lake to then be reassembled.

The variety of wood is white pine and it comes from one of the loveliest forests in North America, LA FORÊT DE L’AIGLE (The Eagle's Forest).

In June 1998, the inauguration of the New HOTEL SACACOMIE took place! Philippe Dagenais drew his inspiration from the original decor and he was able to enhance the warm, natural beauty of Hotel Sacacomie. As you enter the lobby and everywhere inside, you get the true impression that OUR HOUSE IS YOUR HOUSE. Despite the impression of an imposing hotel building, Mr. Dagenais was able to create a warm ambiance while respecting a sober decor. His achievement is well-appreciated by visitors and the staff.
